Process without common sense
One of my professors, Dr. Steven Johnson used to say one quote quite frequently, "common sense without process works but process without common sense is dangerous". The latest announcement of 10 days lockdown is like a process without common sense.
The idea of lockdown is to reduce the COVID growth but not reducing the numbers. If we observed carefully, even in the strict lockdown of first couple of months, the number did not reduce. It kept growing but the rate was slower. The graph never came down. This gave some time to the authorities to prepare the infrastructure. The first 3 months of lockdown has given enough time to be prepared. After that we expected a spike in COVID 19 patients. What we don't understand is that the spike also means at some point, the number will start reducing. Unfortunately, we are not prepared for the idea of the spike. With the new lockdown, we are just pushing it further. At the same time, we do not understand the other side of lockdown. Many small businesses are on the verge of closing down, many people are depressed. What is the cost of these issues? Are we calculating that? So are we really using common sense while fighting with COVID 19?
Let's look at the rules of lockdown from the common sense's perspective.
1. Giving 3 days of notice to people so they will buy things: Okay, isn't that mean, there will be rush in the market to purchase grocery? We have seen, there was huge crowd in the shops and therefore increasing the risk of COVID 19 growth.
2. Next 5 days, grocery shops will be open only for 4 hours: That means, people will come out in 4 hours instead of spreading through out the day. That means more chance of being contacted. Isn't it make more sense that the shops should open more than usual perhaps for 14 to 16 hours? This will spread out the purchasing through out the day. Thus reducing the chances of people contacting each other. I have noticed the local grocery shops get crowded more if we reduce the timing.
3. Morning/Evening walks are not allowed: This is another senseless rule. The idea of walk/jogging is to get the fresh air and workout. If you have observed carefully, people generally walk alone or sometimes in a group of two. We hardly find a situation where there is large crowd walking together (except in marathons). However, the benefit of walking/jogging is tremendous. Your immunity increases multifold which is a key for fighting COVID 19. So instead of promoting it, we banned it. Exactly opposite of common sense.
4. Closing online shopping delivery: Pure common sense. More people purchase online, less change of them going out. If authorities would have helped home deliveries allowed in the lockdown, no one would have gone out to purchase in the first few days. It would have been better, if govt allows them to deliver to home but keeping shops shut.
With all that the most senseless thing is forwarding non- confirmed messages on WhatsApp. We just forward the message which induces fear. Although, every expert keeps saying "don't worry but be careful". All we have to do is keeping social distancing and keeping us clean. The issue is, we are just creating a process without common sense which is dangerous.
